I started looking at the work of Salvador Dali and so I was inspired to create something magnificent. I had a basic sketch of the hand and eye done but all the rest was though of as I went along. I spent more time staring at the painting thinking of what to do than actual painting. I had no central message I wanted to express when I started. This painting really shows how in the last year I have become more aware of my place as an artist and my responsibility as an artist to create work that evokes deep emotions across a wide specturm of personalities. I have never done an oil piece this large and complex and it was a great opportunity to hone my oil skills for the pieces I plan to create next. There was one additonal ingredient and that is carpenter ants which were used for the foliage on the tree at left.
August 4th: Updated version larger size and the final signed version. More ants and some minor tweaks. March 4th: Reversed image because after staring at this image for 9 months it doesn't carry the weight that it would for someone looking at it for the first time.
